The First Aid Book

I always knew that mothering a son would mean some scrapes and bruises and probably a broken bone or two along the way. I started preparing myself after the ultrasound. I didn't want to be like that mom on the Huggie's commercial who wraps her son in a bubble or one that sat in the stands during games churning ulcers in my stomach worrying he would get hurt.

Noah is constantly moving. Always. Even in his sleep (he bangs his head, so hard you can hear it in the other room and he busted his lip and pushed out his tooth from doing it at daycare). Even when he had RSV, the Flu, and Stomach Bug, he didn't slow down to rest. He is everywhere all at once. Always looking for a new adventure.

Two weeks ago our neighbor turned three and got a John Deere gator. He was driving around in the front yard and I let Noah ride in the passenger side. Probably shouldn't of done that. Noah decided after ten minutes or so that he was done and wanted to get out. So he climbs out. Of a moving Gator. The result was his first skinned knee. (Side note: I love my neighbors! There were several of us playing outside with our kids and everyone reacted quickly to help. Then later they came to check on him and brought cupcakes! ) We cleaned it with peroxide and bandaged it. It took several days for the knee to scab (gross, sorry) Did I leave the band aid on to long? Was that the right thing since his knee is in constant contact with dirty floors and grass?

This morning Noah was chasing Charlie in the living room and tripped (over nothing, he is my son!). He hit the floor face first. This resulted in a bloody nose. After holding and comforting him I tried unsuccessfully to apply ice to his nose. Is there a trick to getting a two year old to hold ice on his nose? Is that the right treatment?

I need a savvy book on tips for first aid for a busy 20 month old slightly clumsy adventure loving all boy, boy. Suggestions??? I have a feeling these incidents are just the start.

You are so funny! My Jessa is as much of a "bruiser" as Spencer, though. She has broken an arm (much more painful on Mommy and Daddy, I think), and she is always covered in bruises and scabs. I think you should be happy that Noah kept the band-aid on - both of mine tend to want them off.

I think you are doing A-ok. Kids are always scraping and bruising something. They "take a lickin' and keep on tickin'!" Although, I think there are days that bubble wrap and a helmet 24-7 do not sound like bad ideas. . .
