The Doctor and The Baby Fat

Today I took a day off from battle... I mean school. I took Noah to his follow up visit for the RSV. Tho doctor said his lungs are clear. He even told the nurse to write that with an exclamation point. We can give him a breathing treatment whenever we feel like he needs one but if he exceeds three in a day we should call the doctor. He may get sick again or even develop asthma later down the road from this infection. Thank you all for your prayers!

Here is a suggestion for the pediatricians office. If you aren't going to be able to see my baby until noon. Just tell me to come in at noon not 10:45. That way he can have a normal nap and lunch. You can even call me or tell me when I get there, "Mrs. Jones we are backed up today. Just come in at 12." It would save me an hour in the exam room with a very tired five month old.

Now to my baby fat. In my pregnancy I gained about 52 pounds. Now about 10 -15 of that was fluid. The rest was only being able to keep down grilled cheeses, roast beef and jamocha milkshakes and bed rest. I lost about 25 in the few weeks after Noah's birth. Since Christmas I have only lost eight pounds. I'd like to lose the extra 20 that is left plus the ten I wanted to get rid of before I was pregnant. I have some challenges.
1. I am not breastfeeding.
2. I am a working mom who is short on time. When I get home I have maybe an hour of play with Noah before it is dinner, bath, bed. Then I can barely do anything but get in bed myself. My only option is in the morning before school. I live 20 minutes from the closest gym. That means 4:45 people!!!!
3. I do not have will power. I can resist over indulging but cutting myself off completely from bread and chocolate. (Which was actually the name of this cool restaurant in Washington D.C. close to where Adam lived during his internship.
4. I do not sleep well. I've got two great sleepers in my husband and my baby. But I will lay awake dead tired for hours at a time at night. That makes it hard to get up to exercise.

I think I have a solution. I need a home gym. Walking around the neighborhood with the stroller doesn't burn enough calories for me. I need an elliptical machine in my garage and a T.V. with a DVD players for Pilates and Sculpting workouts. I think that would shave 40 mins off the trips to the gym. And the machine would dictate my pace not the curbs and uneven driveways. So I am going to pray for a cheap elliptical machine and a cheap TV/DVD player. Does anyone know where I can find them for 20$ ?

On a serious note, I know God cares for me and loves me. I am going to have faith that He will help me in this battle by showing me ways to solve the challenges keeping me from losing the weight. He understands it is beginning to effect my self esteem, confidence, friendships, marriage, budget and much more. I am going to pray specifically and diligently for his guidance.

oh carrie. what every woman faces at some point im sure. I think getting a homegym, if you have the money and space, is an amazing idea and opportunity. you might also look for some aerobic DVDs like Taebo or something to do in the morning at home before school. Even if you did 30 minutes before school you could try to walk 10 minutes AT school after lunch and then maybe 20 minutes right after Noah goes to bed...or have sex when Noah goes to bed...that supposedly burns calories! Good luck. I'll need reminding of this in just a few short months!

Hey Carrie... I am so glad you had a day off to spend with your little boy. Just sorry that you spent so much time at the doc's office.
About the baby weight... I had a LOT to lose after Karoline. I did breastfeed her for a year but that only helped a little. We have an eliptical matchine and I honestly believe that burns more calories than anything. I got a good one at Sears for around $350. It was a basic model but got the job done. I also LOVE Taebo.
You don't have a lot of time on your hands so I would start out just trying to fit it in 2 or 3 days a week. I also counted my calories when I lost the weight with Karoline. Writing down my calories REALLY helped. It did take 9 months to get it all off. So I figure 9 months to put it on, 9 months to take it off... Most people say it takes a year. YOU CAN DO IT! But honestly you look great and you are so cute anyway!! I still have about 10 more I want to lose and I have not lost a pound in FOREVER so I am going to have to start walking these San Francisco hills.
God Bless!

Thanks for your encouragement about Babywise! Micah is sleeping all through the night now and were still working on his everyday schedule - mornings are good, but afternoons are a mixed bag. And right now he has a cold, so that's not helping.

I also gained 50 pounds during my pregnancy and have been working to lose it. I only have about 5 more until I'm back to my pre-pregnancy weight Like you, I work full time so. I usually can only work out on Saturdays. But I will take Micah for walks, or if he's awake sometimes I'll make a game of my work outs...he likes to watch the weird things I do.

The most helpful thing for me was actually watching what I ate. I'm a member of Weight Watchers, but you don't have to be to lose the weight. I try to eat foods that are higher in fiber (i.e. fruits, veggies, whole grain breads and pastas). I measure out snacks or buy the 100 calorie pack and I use egg beaters instead of real eggs.

Hey Carrie, I'm so sorry that he had RSV! I completely missed all that b/c I've been slacking on my blogging. But, I'm so glad he's doing better!!!

As for the weight, I understand. I gained almost the exact same as you and lost a good chunk right after but the last 20 pounds was more difficult. My advice, take it or leave, is do whatever little bit you can here and there even if it doesn't feel like you are making progress, you are. And, make small switches gradually to your diet - like water, more fiber (lots of good cereals out there for this that taste good), protein, veg, etc. You know the drill. But, it really helped me to get my mindset to incorporate good stuff instead of trying to take away all the bad if that makes sense. I do understand!! It is so hard with a baby! And, not sleeping really hurts! I will pray that you start sleeping better - that takes a toll on your body physically and mentally and everything!

Thank you ladies for all the great encouragement as far as the weight loss. I have added fiber and protein and limited snacks. I am drinking skim milk and water (flavored, yum K2O pink lemonade!)I already walked with Noah about three times a week. I am continuing that. I gained a pound. I know exercise is the key. I need to find the motivation to put my feet on the floor and move to the living room with the videos!!! Hopefully I can get more motivation and will power. Thank you again for the encouragement and I will keep trucking!
